A food journal app that doesn't count calories

Matcha is an iPhone food journal for the dishes worth remembering. Each entry holds the dish, where you ate it, what you paid, a photo and a score from 1 to 10. Matcha does not count calories or track nutrition. Every entry lands on a map, in its city and in your rankings.

What goes in an entry

Field Example

Place Picked from Apple Maps, or added later if you’re offline
Score 9.5, which reads “Outstanding”
Price €1.40, saved in the currency you pick
Photo From the camera or your library, or none
Note Your answer to “What made it good?”

Date The day you ate it

The dish, the place and the score are the only parts you need, and the place can wait until you’re back online.

What Matcha doesn’t track

Matcha does not count calories, macros or portions. It has no meal plans or weight goals. You log the dishes you want to remember and skip the rest. If you need a nutrition tracker, keep using one; Matcha won’t replace it.

A travel food journal

  • Each dish is filed under its city. A city’s page shows its dishes or its restaurants, ranked.
  • After a trip, pick up to 10 photos at once. Matcha takes the date from each photo and suggests the place from where it was taken, and photos from the same meal get the same place.
  • Each price keeps its currency, so the yen you paid in Tokyo and the euros in Lisbon stay as they were.
  • With no signal abroad, save the dish anyway. Once you’re back online, Matcha finds the place from where you were, or shows Choose place so you can pick it.

Finding a dish again

Rankings shows your journal by food, city, restaurant and year. Search finds your foods, places and dishes as you type. On the map, every place you’ve scored carries the score of the best dish you had there. For more on the restaurant side, see restaurant tracker app.

Private by default

Your journal stays on your iPhone, and you don’t need an account. Matcha has no feed and no followers. You choose what to share: an image of a ranking, a link with your places, or a list you keep with friends through iCloud. The Share usage data switch in Profile turns usage analytics off, and Profile › Export data gives you everything as a file plus your photos.
