Facts about Mapstr are as of October 2026, from its App Store and Google Play listings, its website and its FAQ.
What Mapstr does well
Mapstr is an app for saving places on a map: restaurants, cafés, hotels, viewpoints, photo spots. You sort them with your own tags and colours, add notes and photos, and can open your map offline. Mapstr’s website says it has more than 4 million users.
- It runs on iPhone, Android (500K+ downloads on Google Play), Apple Watch and the web, at web.mapstr.com. Adding places on the web needs Mapstr Plus.
- Maps are public by default, like an Instagram profile. You can make yours private or keep single places secret.
- You can follow friends’ maps and maps from magazines, guides and creators.
- It imports a shared Google Maps list, Google Takeout files (KML, KMZ, JSON or CSV) and Foursquare or Swarm check-ins (import help).
- You can rate a place you’ve tried from 1 to 5 stars. Only you and the people you share your map with see the rating.
- The app is in 11 languages.
If you save all kinds of places, want a map other people can follow, or use Android, Mapstr does more than Matcha.
Mapstr’s price
Mapstr is free up to 300 places. Mapstr Plus removes the limit and adds a visits journal, bulk edits, smart search and alerts near saved places. It starts with a 7-day free trial. The US App Store lists Plus at $5.99 or $8.99 a month and $32.99 to $59.99 a year; Mapstr’s FAQ gives €59 a year or €7.90 a month in Europe as examples.
How Matcha is different
Matcha is an iPhone app for foodies: score the dishes you eat, see your best pizza, ramen or matcha latte ranked, and keep every place on a map with a Want to try list.
It saves the dish
Mapstr saves the place. Matcha saves what you ate there: the dish and a score from 1 to 10 in half steps. A photo, the price and a note are optional. Logging works offline, and you add the place later.
Your scores become rankings
Matcha ranks your dishes by food, city, restaurant and year. Open pizza and you see every pizza you’ve scored, Naples and New York in one list. On the map, each restaurant’s pin shows its best dish’s score.
Want to try, with the dish
Places a friend swears by go on Want to try, with the dish to order if you know it. They show as pink pins next to the places you’ve scored. More on this: restaurant wishlist app.
Google Maps import
Share or paste a Google Maps list link in Profile, choose the places, and they land on your map as saved places. Matcha reads shared list links only. Mapstr also reads Takeout files and Foursquare. Step by step: Google Maps list to iPhone.
Sharing without a public map
Matcha has no public map or followers, so you share on purpose. Post an image of your top 5. Use “Send my places” to give a friend a link that copies your places into their Want to try. Or keep a shared list through iCloud, where you see friends’ scores only after you’ve scored the dish.

Moving from Mapstr
Matcha has no Mapstr import. If your places are also in a Google Maps list, share that list to Matcha and choose what to bring over. You can keep using Mapstr for shops, hotels and sights, and Matcha for food.
Which one to pick
Pick Mapstr if you’re on Android, want a map that others can follow, or want to save more than food for free. Pick Matcha if you mostly save food, want a score for each dish and your best of each food ranked, and you’re on an iPhone. For more options, including apps for Android, see Beli alternatives.
