What the lists agree on
Seu Pizza Illuminati is the only place on more than four of the lists. Six of the seven name it. The exception is Puntarella Rossa, whose list covers six historic Roman-style pizzerias. Seven places tie for second with four lists each: Emma Pizzeria, L’Elementare Trastevere, La Gatta Mangiona, Pizzarium Bonci, Pizzeria Ai Marmi, Pizzeria Da Remo and San Martino Pizza & Bolle.
The two award guides and the five media lists often name different places. Of the 28 ranked places, 16 are named by media lists only. 50 Top Pizza names six Rome pizzerias, and all six are ranked. Romeing names 23 of the 28 and Katie Parla names 20.
Trastevere has four ranked places: Seu Pizza Illuminati, L’Elementare Trastevere, Pizzeria Ai Marmi and Ivo a Trastevere. Two Bonci shops in Trionfale both rank, Pizzarium Bonci joint second and Panificio Bonci joint 17th.
50 Kalò, which leads the Naples guide, ranks here too: 50 Kalò di Ciro Salvo is joint ninth, named by 3 of 7.
Pizza in Rome
Two styles go by the name Roman pizza. Pizza tonda is round, with a thin, crisp base. Pizza al taglio is baked in large rectangular trays and sold in slices by weight. The ranking has both, with sit-down pizzerias next to slice shops such as Pizzarium Bonci and Ruver Teglia Frazionata.
Some names have more than one branch in Rome, L’Elementare among them. Each is counted once, at the address shown.
