Food bucket list: 100 dishes to try around the world

A food bucket list is a checklist of dishes to eat at least once, ideally where each is a local classic: pizza margherita in Naples, sushi in Tokyo, pastel de nata in Lisbon. This page has 100 ideas by country. In Matcha, save each dish's place to Want to try and score the dish once you've eaten it.

Make your own food bucket list

  1. Pick the dishes

Start with dishes from the list below and from the places you're going this year. Ten is enough to start.

  2. Find a place for each

Ask friends, read local lists or our guides, or search the Matcha map for a restaurant, café or bakery that serves the dish.

  3. Save it to Want to try

In Matcha, open the place and tap Want to try, then + Dish to name the dish. The place shows as a pink pin on your map.

  4. Eat it and score it

When you're there, tap Add on its row in Want to try and score the dish from 1 to 10. The place leaves Want to try, and the dish joins your rankings.

Keep your list in Matcha

Matcha is an iPhone app for foodies: score the dishes you eat, see your best pizza, ramen or matcha latte ranked, and keep every place on a map with a Want to try list.

Want to try is where a food bucket list lives in Matcha. Each entry is a place with the dish you want there, so the row reads “Pizza · the place’s name”. The places show as pink pins on your map. Want to try sits at the top of the Lists tab, with its places grouped by city. When a friend sends you their places from Matcha, they land in the same list.

When you finally eat the dish, tap Add on its row. The place and dish are already filled in, so you add a photo if you want and give it a score from 1 to 10. The place leaves Want to try, and the dish takes its spot in your rankings, next to every other pizza or ramen you’ve scored. More on saving places: restaurant wishlist app.

Matcha is a free download for iPhone (iOS 26 or later). Matcha Pro has a 7-day free trial, then costs $9.99/year, or $0.99/week without a trial. Prices vary by country, and nothing is free after the trial.

Where to eat them

Our guides rank places for some of these dishes by how many recognised lists name each place. To track what you eat along the way, see how to keep track of restaurants.

Questions

What is a food bucket list?

A list of dishes you want to eat at least once, usually tied to the place where each one is a local classic. You tick them off as you go.

What should be on a food bucket list?

Mix famous dishes from places you'll visit with a few from your own city. Ten dishes is a good first list.

How do I keep a food bucket list on my iPhone?

A note works. In Matcha, you save the place where you want to eat each dish to Want to try. It shows on your map in pink, and scoring the dish moves it into your rankings.

Can I save a dish to Want to try without a place?

No. Each Want to try entry is a place, and the dish is optional, so add it once you know where you want to eat it.

Can friends add to my food bucket list?

When a friend sends you their places from Matcha, you get a copy in your Want to try with their dish and score. Nothing goes back to them.

Is Matcha free?

It's a free download, but using it takes Matcha Pro: a 7-day free trial, then $9.99/year, or $0.99/week without a trial. Other plans may show in the app, prices vary by country, and nothing is free after the trial.
