Francesinha in Porto
A francesinha is a Porto sandwich: toasted bread layered with hot meats such as steak, ham and linguiça, covered in melted cheese and a hot tomato and beer sauce, usually with chips on the side. It’s said to have started at A Regaleira, on Rua do Bonjardim, in the early 1950s.
Time Out Porto suggests starting with the prego no pão at Francesinha Café. Café Santiago, Cervejaria Brasão, Lado B and Yuko Tavern have more than one address, so check the hours of the one you plan to visit. For Lisbon, see the top 10 places for pastel de nata in Lisbon.
