What the lists agree on
Three gelaterie tie at the top, and the same five lists name all three: Gambero Rosso, Dissapore, Time Out, Lonely Planet and CiboToday. The sixth list, Eater’s guide to Florence restaurants, names one gelateria, My Sugar in San Lorenzo.
CiboToday names all 11 of Gambero Rosso’s picks, the biggest overlap between any two lists here. It also names 12 of the 13 ranked places. Four of the six joint-eighth places are on those two lists only.
Dissapore’s list has five gelaterie, and all five rank fifth or higher here.
Four of the seven places named by three or more lists are south of the Arno: Gelateria della Passera and Sbrino in Oltrarno, La Sorbettiera in San Frediano and Gelateria Caminia in Gavinana. Some ranked places are outside the old centre, such as Badiani in Campo di Marte, Barroccino in Novoli and Mordilatte in Coverciano.
Gelato in Florence
Bernardo Buontalenti, an architect and engineer who worked for the Medici in the 16th century, is credited with inventing an early form of Florentine gelato. Badiani, founded in 1932, sells a flavour called Buontalenti, and it is Time Out’s pick there.
Some of these gelaterie have more than one shop in Florence, La Sorbettiera and Badiani among them. Each is counted once, at the address shown.
